Park Ridge Was Born as Pennyville—And We're Bringing the Name Back with Purpose

Before it was Park Ridge, our town was officially named Pennyville in 1854, in honor of George Penny, a brickmaker whose clay deposits and kilns put this area on the map—literally. His clay-rich brickyards brought jobs, homes, and a spark of prosperity to the area. The name stuck around long enough to become part of our town’s legacy—even though the city eventually adopted the name Park Ridge. While the name changed to Park Ridge in 1873 to better reflect the area’s scenic elevation and greenery, we think “Pennyville” still carries a powerful legacy—one rooted in hard work, local pride, and building something that lasts.

We like to think George Penny would be proud that his name still inspires generosity and community spirit.

That’s why we launched Pennies for Pennyville—a grassroots charity focused on collecting small contributions that make a big impact right here in our neighborhoods. We support local families, nonprofits, and causes that build the kind of caring community Mr. Penny started over 170 years ago.
